Character Info
Character's Name: Kamui
Character's Canon: Gintama
Character's Age: 18
Canon Point: Chapter 653, after Kamui offers to fend off the big bad's immortal zombie soldiers so the main three can save their dog (No, really.)
Background/History: Kamui's wiki covers (or at least tries to cover) everything save the current arc, during which he returns to Earth and agrees to keep his murder boner for half the main cast in check until the big bad is defeated.
Strengths:
➛ Disciplined. Kamui is a master of martial arts. Though he doesn't act like it, he has cultivated excellent focus through meditation and repetition. As such, he rarely loses control of his emotions unless he actively decides to. He is very talented at making it seem like he takes action on a whim when in fact he's already observed his surroundings, analyzed his opponents, and considered the consequences before he charges headlong into danger. He will always charge headlong into danger, but he will be disciplined about it every time. This is seen most readily in the Silver Soul Arc, during which he has to save first Gintama's main protagonist and then his little sister Kagura when they lose their heads in the fight for Earth. Kamui is not apathetic or stoic; he just has the control necessary to harness his emotions in a practical way.
➛ Persistent. When Kamui sets a goal for himself, he will risk anything and everything to achieve it. He was only about eight years old when he attempted to kill his own father in order to save his mother's life, and ever since then, he has trained solely for the chance to challenge him again. Whether it's his determination to get all the fights he wants or his ambition to rise through the Harusame Pirates' ranks, it all stems from the same single-minded persistence he's had since he was born. Time, pain, even his very self are nothing compared to his goal of becoming "the strongest." He will keep pushing through it all, no matter how many times he fails.
➛ Straightforward. Though Kamui is an antagonist, and a sadistic one at that, he's no schemer. Au contraire, he's almost refreshingly open about what a horrible person he is. He will insult, attack, and even murder others without blinking an eye, but he'll be perfectly honest about his intentions from the get go. Once he's advertised that he's an alien space pirate assassin turned national terrorist, there's really no point in hiding anything else. On the rare occasion he does lie, it always has to do with his denial over the fact that his little sister reminds him so much of their late mother. So, really, the only time he lies to others is when he's lying to himself. This makes sense, when you consider that his goal is usually to squeeze a fight out of someone. Beating around the bush won't achieve the same result as insulting the person's mother and then demanding they fight.
Weaknesses:
➛ Selfish. Kamui has virtually no material desires. Somehow, however, he still manages to be the most selfish teenager in the known galaxy. He is callous and sacrilegious, fickle and petty, sometimes all in the same sentence. Nothing is sacred to him, and thus nothing is above ridicule. He will tease and taunt and pettily torture his companions with as much gusto as his enemies, which may well be a good thing considering that whether he sees someone as an ally or an enemy depends entirely on his momentary whims. An example of how quickly he can change tack is his and Kagura's joint battle against the Yato legend, The Eldest. Kamui spends this single battle switching between working with his sister to fight The Eldest, fighting his sister, fighting his sister while kicking The Eldest around between them, defeating The Eldest together with his sister, and finally trying to kill his sister again. Long story short, he does what he wants when he wants however the hell he wants to do it, and screw everyone else.
➛ Extremist. Despite living in such a diverse galaxy, Kamui has always had an issue with seeing his surroundings as clear cut black and white. People are either strong or they're weak, interesting or boring, worth everything or worth nothing. He doesn't believe in a middle ground. With an attitude like that, it's no wonder that every action he takes is extreme as well. He can't just aim to be stronger, no. He has to resolve himself to be the absolute strongest, prove his worth by fighting every powerful opponent he comes across to the death, and give up everything else he cares about in the process.
➛ Lacking identity. Kamui doesn't hesitate to describe himself as empty. You have to be, he insists, in order to qualify as the vessel for a heavy title like "the strongest." Before he hit puberty, Kamui had already severed all ties he had to any objects, places, and people he'd ever known. He was no longer a son or a brother or a citizen of Rakuyou. He wasn't even an individual Yato, instead doing his best to exemplify the violent code of his many ancestors. He did this all because he recognizes that sentiment has no place on the battlefield, certainly not when his ultimate goal is to kill his own father, but sentiment is required in order to forge a sense of self. Kamui's lack of identity is what makes it so easy for his blood to overwhelm him and erase what little does make up his sense of self. As it turns out, being a mindless killing machine that doesn't even remember its own name isn't all it's cracked up to be. After he regains himself, Kamui accepts the importance of attachments, but he is still new enough to the concept that it doesn't come easy.
Powers/Abilities: Kamui is a member of the Yato Clan, a race of violent aliens from a long dead planet. They are known as one of the most powerful races in the galaxy, also the most bloodthirsty.
➛ Superhuman strength and endurance. All Yato are significantly stronger than humans, and their bodies are capable of taking damage that would kill anyone else. For example, Kamui's subordinate catches a bullet in his teeth, his father is able to withstand a blast from a battleship with only his umbrella as a shield, and Kamui himself keeps fighting long enough to slaughter twenty men after being pumped with poison plenty to kill an elephant. Not only can they survive the vacuum of space (somehow!), Kamui even manages to break into the control center of a spaceship from outside. He frequently murders opponents just by thrusting his palm through their chests.
➛ Rapid healing capabilities. Though Kamui is very skilled with ignoring or simply hiding his pain on top of his insane durability, his abilities go one step farther. Yato are very quick healers. This is established right away when Kagura is shot and bleeding on the ground only to sit up and show her new friends that the wound has already closed less than an hour later. Kamui has been literally blown up and yet still able to pop in for some first aid treatment then jump back into battle on the same day.
➛ Extensive hand-to-hand fighting experience. Kamui is not only powerful, he is also disciplined. Fighting life-or-death battles has been his norm since he was a child, and through accumulated experience, he's gained a keen battle sense to accompany his seemingly weightless acrobatics. His teacher was the infamous Housen, King of the Yato Clan, and Kamui has since usurped his late teacher's position as leader of Harusame's Seventh Division, the organization's strongest combat division. Though he regularly refers to himself as an idiot, when it comes to the battlefield, he's a brutal mastermind.
➛ Yato blood. The blood of the Yato Clan is described by Kamui as a sort of collective intuition made up of the memory of their ancestors. Throughout most of the series, this is seen as a negative trait because Yato instincts always tend toward violence. The Yato have to overcome their base instincts or else lose their identities to a sea of mindless bloodlust. Kamui, Kagura, and Umibouzu all fall prey to their blood at one point in their lives - during which time they attack their opponents indiscriminately and with no regard for their own bodies. It's their own personalized berserker button. Although Kagura is originally afraid of this blood, Kamui teaches her that there's more to it as long as the Yato in question is properly disciplined. This well of instinct can be utilized through the senses and allow one to measure his/her opponent, comparing said opponent to the thousands of battles stored within their blood's collective memory. Kamui can sense the presence of other Yato with it, distinguish the truly powerful from the braggadocious, and better analyze the enemy's battle strategy.
Other Noteworthy Traits:
➛ Sunlight sensitivity. Though the Yato are infamously powerful, they do have one prominent weakness: their bodies cannot handle direct sunlight. Exposure to the sun's rays will dry them out until they literally crumble to death. Many Yato, Kamui included, develop some small immunity through exposure therapy, but even then, the sun will make them ill or exhaust them and prolonged exposure will still kill them. Because of this, Yato are known throughout the galaxy for their pale, flawless skin and the parasols they carry. Because they have to have these parasols with them at all times anyway, the Yato reinforce and weaponize them, using them as clubs or even guns. Kamui is no exception.
➛ Yato metabolism. The Yato as a species have to eat enormous amounts of food in order to maintain their muscular physiques and quick healing. Kamui is ranked the biggest eater of them all.
Weapons & Other Special Inventory: On his person, Kamui will have his clothing (hooded cloak, kung fu styled shirt and pants, socks, boots, sash, hair tie) and the bandages he wrapped around his arms to protect them from the sun. He will also have his reinforced deep purple parasol. The handle acts as a gun barrel which will be loaded with regular bullets. His extra item will be his parasol's sheath. (Yes, he really does have a sheath for his parasol.)
Color: Red. Kamui is an assassin with an overwhelming urge to spill blood, and as cliche as the choice may be, I feel like it's the only one for him.
Sample: TDM Toplevel
[ OPTIONAL ] World Aspect: Two words: space pirates. Gintama is all about aliens invading Earth, and what better plot device is there than spaceship-riding alien pirates? Specific to Gintama and Kamui's history are the Harusame Space Pirates. They and their fleet of ships can be used as an attacking force in a plot, as transportation for a setting change, or even as a supplier for some unknown smuggled substance. Whatever works.
