isle of avalon app

Q1: You've been stranded on a desert island with only one standard-size travel suitcase. If you could only have 3 items in that suitcase, what would you want those items to be and why?

"What, is that supposed to be a joke? Did you forget the punchline? You actually expect me to answer something so tedious?"

Yes? The answer is yes. Kamui rolls his eyes. Well, if he must, then he's going to make it about food.

"I'd pack a suitcase-sized portion of fried rice, a bottle of soy sauce, and my communicator. That way I can call Abuto to come pick me up while I eat."

Q2: Tell us about a defining event in your life that you think influenced who you are today.

Kamui snorts, amused. For a young man who hasn't even breached twenty, he's experienced an inordinate amount of defining events in his life. But the most recent and the most affirming would have to be…

"Well, I did help save a planet. It wasn't even my planet." He chuckles wryly. "It's funny, you know, the difference between fighting to win and fighting to protect. I used to think the gap between the two was impossibly wide. But even I was able to protect something."

Q3: What does family mean to you and who do you consider a part of your family?

"You're trying to make me angry, aren't you?"

Kamui frowns as he considers the question. It's the most loaded question anyone could ever ask him. What is family to him but broken by his own hand? The dying mother he failed to save, the absent father he failed to kill, and the weak little sister who cried when he left them all behind.

Oh. Wait.

That's right.

His frown softens, and the edges of his eyes crinkle with growing affection.

She's not weak anymore, is she?

Kamui left her for dead, but she came after him anyway. She followed him halfway across the galaxy just to teach him a lesson. She beat him into submission and told him that he could never escape from the family he'd destroyed, from the family he'd thought he no longer had a right to. No matter how far away he ran, no matter how many atrocities he committed, he would always be her brother, and they would always be the progeny of the greatest Yato warriors in the universe.

She gave him someone to be, something to live up to. She gave him strength in a way he'd never thought possible.

She showed him what real strength is.

"Well, there is one person... She's a snot-nosed brat with terrible taste in men, but one day, she may be even stronger than me. She's my little sister." His expression turns sharp, dangerous. "She's the only reason you're still alive. I'll cooperate until her world is safe."

Q4: Tell me about a time you were involved in a personal conflict (not a physical fight). What would you do differently to resolve it?

"Personal conflict? Not a physical fight?" he echoes, genuine confusion flashing across his face. His brows furrow, a bit irritated at what he perceives as the utmost stupidity. "No such thing. Physical fights are how you solve personal conflicts."

Fighting is what Kamui knows. He's a master martial artist who has assassinated countless men for sport. That is how he has resolved every conflict, even mental ones, since he failed to save his mother's life and ran away from home a decade ago. If he's not sure of something, he just has to defeat it. Feelings? Bonds? Compromise? He's attempted to murder each of these concepts within himself with varying degrees of success. The most effective way to accomplish this, he soon discovered, is to murder others who display these concepts toward him. Thus, every personal conflict becomes a physical one.

If he had the patience to sit down and reflect on this question honestly, Kamui's answer may very well be his decision to run away on that day. If he could have just faced his feelings, accepted that bonds aren't permanent, and compromised with the rest of his family… If he could have done all that instead of run away a failure, maybe he would be a stronger person today.

Q5: Do you have any regrets? If so, what are the biggest ones? If not, what is something you wish you had gotten to do back home?

He smiles, wide and toothy and deadly. "If you keep asking questions like that, I might have to ask a few of my own. Like how attached you are to your lungs."

Since his sister managed to beat her unconditional love into Kamui, he has made some serious strides forward regarding his overwhelming guilt. Before, he couldn't even allow himself to think about the past without being haunted by his weakness. Now, at least, he can see his weakness for what it is and accept that it is a part of himself. He can look back on the day he tried to kill his father in order to save his mother, the day he ran away in shame after he failed to accomplish either, and he can admit to himself that his failure had broken him. He can admit that he's regretted it every day of his life since.

He is not, however, anywhere near the level where he can admit as much to a stranger.

Doing that would accomplish nothing anyway. It's infinitely more important, in his mind, that he be able to keep pressing forward into the future. If this time he can successfully protect the family he'd destroyed…

Well, that would mean something, wouldn't it?

comments

Kamui's physical strength is beyond what any human would ever be capable of. He can kick through the outer hulls of spaceships if he's feeling particularly motivated. This power comes adjacent to a glaring weakness, however. Any amount of sunlight directly hitting his skin results in fatigue or illness, while prolonged exposure will kill him. Also, his goal in life is to spill the blood of as many powerful opponents as possible on his quest to become the strongest. Think of him as an alien vampire, basically.

Utsuro, the big bad, has technically been defeated, and the Earth is damaged but not destroyed.
Character Age: 18

Appearance: Though Kamui is an alien, he looks almost entirely human already. No changes in the humanization process will be cosmetic. This does mean he'll be retaining that stupid lock of hair that always sticks up off the top of his head though. Just call him the cowlick killer.

Background/History: Kamui's Wiki

This wiki covers everything save the Silver Soul Arc, during which Kamui returned to Earth and agreed to keep his murder boner for half the main cast in check until they could defeat Utsuro and his Earth-destroying armies.

Strengths:

➛ Disciplined. Kamui is a master of martial arts. Though he doesn't act like it, he has cultivated excellent focus through meditation and repetition. As such, he rarely loses control of his emotions unless he actively decides to. He is very talented at making it seem like he takes action on a whim when in fact he's already observed his surroundings, analyzed his opponents, and considered the consequences before he charges headlong into danger. He will always charge headlong into danger, but he'll know what he's doing when he does. This is seen most readily in the Silver Soul Arc, during which he has to save first Gintama's main protagonist and then his little sister Kagura when they lose their heads in the fight for Earth. He goes so far as to scold them while he does it, citing that not even he would be able to make up for a military deficit that large. He, the man who is still very interested in killing both of them himself. Kamui is not apathetic or stoic; he just has the control necessary to harness his emotions in a practical way. He exhibits this control often, such as when he remains coolly defiant in the face of his own execution or when he jumps from zero to sixty in an instant upon finding a worthy opponent. It's just hard to tell when he smiles all the damn time.

➛ Persistent. When Kamui sets a goal for himself, he will risk anything and everything to achieve it, even other people. He was only about eight years old when he attempted to kill his own father in order to save his mother's life, and ever since then, he has trained solely for the chance to challenge him again. Whether it's his determination to sucker strong opponents into a fight by any dirty means necessary or his ambition to rise through the Harusame's ranks and thus get more dangerous assignments, it all stems from the same single-minded persistence he's had since he was born. The same single-minded persistence that drove him to destroy his family in order to protect it. Time, pain, even his very self are nothing compared to his goal of becoming "the strongest." He will keep pushing through every obstacle, no matter how many times he fails. Because, in his own words, he only sees what's ahead.

➛ Straightforward. Though Kamui is an antagonist, and a sadistic one at that, he's no schemer. Au contraire, he's almost refreshingly open about what a horrible person he is. He will insult, attack, and even murder others without blinking an eye, but he'll be perfectly honest about his intentions from the get go. Once he's advertised that he's an alien space pirate assassin turned national terrorist, there's really no point in hiding anything else. This is demonstrated when he approaches Takasugi after receiving his assignment to kill the man. He orders his subordinates to make sure they won't be interrupted and proceeds to demand of Takasugi that he "please die." On the rare occasion that Kamui does lie, it always has to do with his denial over the fact that his little sister reminds him so much of their late mother. So, really, the only time he deceives others is when he's deceiving himself. This works out, when you consider that his goal is usually to squeeze a fight out of someone. Beating around the bush won't achieve the same result as insulting the person's mother and then demanding they fight back or else.

Weaknesses:

➛ Selfish. Kamui has virtually no material desires. Somehow, however, he still manages to be the most selfish teenager in the known galaxy. He is callous and sacrilegious, fickle and petty, sometimes all in the same sentence. Nothing is sacred to him, and thus nothing is above ridicule. After all, if Kamui doesn't approve of something, that means it's worthless, and everyone else should think so too. He will tease and taunt and pettily torture his companions with as much gusto as his enemies, which may well be a good thing considering that whether he sees someone as an ally or an enemy depends entirely on his momentary whims. An example of how quickly he can change tack is his and Kagura's joint battle against Yato legend, The Eldest. Kamui spends this single battle switching between working with his sister to fight The Eldest, bickering with his sister, attacking his sister while kicking The Eldest around between them, defeating The Eldest together with his sister, and finally trying to kill his sister again. Even when confronted by several people demanding they should have first dibs on a rematch because Kamui instigated their initial fights before leaving them high and dry, he just laughs them off and equates them to girls angry that he's taken their virginity. Long story short, he does what he wants when he wants however the hell he wants to do it, and damn the consequences.

➛ Extremist. Despite living in such a diverse galaxy, Kamui has always had an issue with seeing his surroundings as clear cut black and white. People are either strong or they're weak, interesting or boring, worth everything or worth nothing. He looks at objects, places, and even concepts the same way. He just doesn't perceive that middle ground. This is readily apparent during his battle with his father. Kamui spends the entire sequence raving about how he's grown strong, just as his father asked him to, demanding his father's attention even as he tries to kill him. This dichotomy is glaring, and yet Kamui can't see it. He is completely convinced he hates his father, so this must be the only truth. This means that hatred is the only emotion he can express his other sentiments with. Murder is literally the only option he sees to make his father proud. With an attitude like that, it's no wonder that every action he takes is extreme as well. He can't just aim to be stronger, no. He has to resolve himself to be the absolute strongest, prove his worth by fighting every powerful opponent he comes across to the death, and give up everything else he cares about in the process. Moderation doesn't exist in his vocabulary.

➛ Lacking identity. Kamui doesn't hesitate to describe himself as empty. You have to be, he insists, in order to qualify as the vessel for a heavy title like "the strongest." Before he hit puberty, Kamui had already severed all ties he had to any objects, places, and people he'd ever known. He was no longer a son or a brother or a citizen of Rakuyou. He wasn't even an individual Yato, instead doing his best to exemplify the code of violence adhered to his many ancestors. He did this all because he recognizes that sentiment has no place on the battlefield, certainly not when his ultimate goal is to kill his own father, but sentiment is required in order to forge a sense of self. Without it, Kamui never seeks to define himself beyond his own physical strength. He has no favorites, no hobbies, no aversions, nothing to call his own. This lack of identity is what makes it so easy for his Yato blood to overwhelm him, turning him into a mindless killing machine that doesn't even remember its own name. After he regains his mind, Kamui comes to accept the importance of attachments even in battle, but he is still new enough to the concept that it doesn't come easy. Beyond sort of attempting to be a big brother (not necessarily a good one), he still only has his strength to rely on.

➛ Sacrifice. This ties into his other weaknesses and is more of a result than a cause. Because Kamui cares so little about others, because he's so black and white in his views, because he lacks a sense of self, Kamui is more ready than anyone to sacrifice anything for his goals. This permeates his very core in unexpected ways. He is always ready to take a hit before he can land one in a fight, protects others by hurting them himself and then informing them of what mistake allowed it to happen, and consistently destroys his own reputation for the sake of getting people to hate him enough to fight him. While he's perfectly willing to shoot an unarmed teenage girl just to clear space for a battle, he's equally ready to take a stab wound to the chest in order to shield Kagura from Utsuro's wrath. If he were to die in battle, he wouldn't hold it against the one who killed him either. That's simply the way of the battlefield.

Fatal Flaw: Kamui's downfall is his complete and utter inability to accept his own weakness. He is so desperate to be strong that rather than face his flaws and overcome them, he "kills" them. He kills them inside of himself as well as literally killing those he sees exhibiting the same flaws. This is why he is so quick to condemn things like love, compassion, and the desire to protect others. These are the kinds of emotions that made him realize how pathetic and weak he really was. These are his flaws. As a child, he did everything within his power to save his mother's life, to protect her from her own family, from himself, and yet he walked away beaten, bloody, and alone. His father had nearly killed him; his mother was never going to recover. The only choice Kamui had was to leave and grow stronger, so he killed those lingering affections and hollowed himself out into an empty shell. When he sees others fighting for a cause or for their loved ones now, it's laughable to him. It even bores him. Until they start to win. That's when Kamui loses his fine-tuned control. Because if others can succeed where he failed, that means it wasn't his ideals that fell short. He himself is the failure. He is weak.

While at his current canon point, he's accepted that running from his weakness is weakness in itself, he's only just started to learn how to correct that behavior. Nobody gets over ten years running trauma in a day, least of all someone as stubborn and self-absorbed as Kamui.

Driving Force: Rather than seeing strength as a way to achieve his goals, Kamui considers it to be the end game. Growing stronger is his motivation. Period. He wants to know every kind of strength there is in the universe, see it with his own eyes, and one day defeat it. It's what drives his every action. He's never wasted a thought for what he'll do once he obtains his coveted title of "the strongest." All he wants is to keep fighting and, as a result, grow ever more powerful.

Patron: Kamui grew up on the planet Rakuyou, finds himself more and more intrigued by planet Earth, and spends a great deal of his time on Harusame Space Pirate vessels, but the only place he ever calls home is the battlefield. Though Kamui would sooner side with Mars' bloodlustful Greek counterpart, in his current state of mind - one searching for new meaning without being forced to give up the old, Mars is an ideal patron to provide what he needs rather than what he wants.

He exemplifies many of the house's desired traits, though not always in the most direct of manners.

Strength, obviously, is his everything. Despite having set up shop with scheming and manipulative pirates, Kamui leads the division of forces specifically designated for combat, not criminal activities. He is the Harusame's sword, their ultimate offensive force, and everyone knows it. They just also know that Kamui harbors no more love for them than the people he kills for them. Among the rest of the Harusame, he is called the Lightning Spear of the Seventh Division and is eventually set to be executed because the Admiral is afraid of him and his endless ambition for strength.

Kamui's division subordinates, on the other hand, are ridiculously loyal. Abuto, his second-in-command, cites that seeing Kamui smile in the face of death is their pride and joy. They admire his valor, a courage so over the top it may well be crazy, and seek to emulate it. Though Kamui is painted as the worst kind of boss from the moment he's introduced, this is only a surface perception. He will absolutely murder his subordinates if they get in his way, but unlike anyone else, he will give them a warning first. He is not at all above ordering his men on a suicide charge, but he will be charging in right alongside them. He will tell them to their faces that losers should die when they fail him, but he will still carry them to safety on the grounds that he needs them alive to do his paperwork for him. Those who fight alongside him will never be coddled, the expectations are high, but they will be treated as an extension of Kamui himself, and he will dutifully stand by them.

A protective nature is not something the Kamui of today would ascribe himself, but it's worth noting that it was the original reason Kamui sought out strength in the first place. His father told him again and again to grow stronger so that he could protect his mother and little sister, and so a young Kamui quietly stood there and took beating after beating as his baby sister's personal shield. Kamui may have tried to kill those feelings later, but he couldn't obliterate them completely. In his defining fight with protagonist Gintoki, Kagura shields Gintoki from her brother's fist, and despite everything Kamui insists he stands for, he hesitates. In the battle against Utsuro, he goes on to save her life twice and Gintoki's too. He's not done with them yet, so he can't just let them die.

The less desirable traits of the house may well be some of Kamui's favorites.

Being violent is what he's known for across the galaxy. It's the one part of his reputation that he actively enjoys spreading around. Sadomasochistic tendencies will do that to a guy. The more hostile he appears, the more likely other hostile entities will seek him out to challenge him.

Impatience and an uncompromising ego are what his subordinates have to deal with on a daily basis, and it's the reason why Abuto is 32-going-on-55. In Kamui's introductory arc, he meets with his former teacher Housen under orders only to intimidate the man. Instead, he kidnaps a child for leverage, demands a night with Housen's personal escort, and promptly does battle with him on his own roof. Even when it comes to those he respects as his equal such as Takasugi, he will only go along with them until he finds his next new shiny. When the two of them team up to take the Shogun's head, Kamui starts out eager to compete with his new partner, but the moment he catches sight of a more powerful opponent, he turns around and slaughters a horde of Takasugi's men so he can challenge his chosen prey one-on-one. He's not committed to any cause enough to be patient with it, and until recently, he hasn't had any reason to compromise what he wants for anyone else.

This entire application demonstrates exactly how narrow Kamui's focus can be. He has a grand total of one goal in life, and it drives his actions to the point of excluding everything else. The way he's managed to contort his entire world around the concept of strength has actually led to him missing the point of having strength in the first place.

No other patron rings as truly with Kamui as Mars.

GAME INFORMATION

Setting Suitability: Kamui will consent to his god's call for the same reason he does everything else: he wants to grow stronger. With Utsuro the strongest man in the galaxy defeated, Kamui is left with no direction. How does he get stronger from here? Well, it would help to better understand what strength is and what it can be in different hands. The samurai of Earth have shown Kamui that physical strength isn't everything. Thus, in a world where everyone is forced to compete on a level playing field, a world in which he's been stripped of the Yato Clan's innate physical strength and healing capabilities, he'll have the opportunity to see for himself what these people have that he lacks. Either he'll figure it out or die trying. These are the kinds of stakes Kamui lives for.

I personally look forward to playing out Kamui's constant struggle to form bonds with his new teammates. He has little trouble fighting alongside most allies while the battle is raging, but he simply doesn't make friends. It doesn't help that anyone with the physical and/or mental fortitude to earn his respect is someone he immediately wants to fight to the death. At his current canon point, he's at his limit just wrestling with the notion of caring for his father rather than killing him, a struggle he's undertaken for his little sister's sake rather than his own. I want to take this trend a step further. Now that he's officially allowed himself to be part of a family again, he needs to find a reason to start caring for someone unrelated.

Sample: TDM1, TDM2

comments

Though he doesn't act like it, he has cultivated excellent focus through meditation and repetition. As such, he rarely loses control of his emotions unless he actively decides to. He is very talented at making it seem like he takes action on a whim when in fact he's already observed his surroundings, analyzed his opponents, and considered the consequences before he charges headlong into danger. He will always charge headlong into danger, but he will be disciplined about it every time. This is seen most readily in the Silver Soul Arc, during which he has to save first Gintama's main protagonist and then his little sister Kagura when they lose their heads in the fight for Earth. Kamui is not apathetic or stoic; he just has the control necessary to harness his emotions in a practical way.

➛ Persistent. When Kamui sets a goal for himself, he will risk anything and everything to achieve it. He was only about eight years old when he attempted to kill his own father in order to save his mother's life, and ever since then, he has trained solely for the chance to challenge him again. Whether it's his determination to get all the fights he wants or his ambition to rise through the Harusame Pirates' ranks, it all stems from the same single-minded persistence he's had since he was born. Time, pain, even his very self are nothing compared to his goal of becoming "the strongest." He will keep pushing through it all, no matter how many times he fails.

On the rare occasion he does lie, it always has to do with his denial over the fact that his little sister reminds him so much of their late mother. So, really, the only time he lies to others is when he's lying to himself. This makes sense, when you consider that his goal is usually to squeeze a fight out of someone. Beating around the bush won't achieve the same result as insulting the person's mother and then demanding they fight.

Weaknesses:

➛ Selfish. Kamui has virtually no material desires. Somehow, however, he still manages to be the most selfish teenager in the known galaxy. He is callous and sacrilegious, fickle and petty, sometimes all in the same sentence. Nothing is sacred to him, and thus nothing is above ridicule. He will tease and taunt and pettily torture his companions with as much gusto as his enemies, which may well be a good thing considering that whether he sees someone as an ally or an enemy depends entirely on his momentary whims. An example of how quickly he can change tack is his and Kagura's joint battle against the Yato legend, The Eldest. Kamui spends this single battle switching between working with his sister to fight The Eldest, fighting his sister, fighting his sister while kicking The Eldest around between them, defeating The Eldest together with his sister, and finally trying to kill his sister again. Long story short, he does what he wants when he wants however the hell he wants to do it, and screw everyone else.

➛ Extremist. Despite living in such a diverse galaxy, Kamui has always had an issue with seeing his surroundings as clear cut black and white. People are either strong or they're weak, interesting or boring, worth everything or worth nothing. He doesn't believe in a middle ground. With an attitude like that, it's no wonder that every action he takes is extreme as well. He can't just aim to be stronger, no. He has to resolve himself to be the absolute strongest, prove his worth by fighting every powerful opponent he comes across to the death, and give up everything else he cares about in the process.

He wasn't even an individual Yato, instead doing his best to exemplify the violent code of his many ancestors. He did this all because he recognizes that sentiment has no place on the battlefield, certainly not when his ultimate goal is to kill his own father, but sentiment is required in order to forge a sense of self. Kamui's lack of identity is what makes it so easy for his blood to overwhelm him and erase what little does make up his sense of self. As it turns out, being a mindless killing machine that doesn't even remember its own name isn't all it's cracked up to be. After he regains himself, Kamui accepts the importance of attachments, but he is still new enough to the concept that it doesn't come easy.

Powers/Abilities: Kamui is a member of the Yato Clan, a race of violent aliens from a long dead planet. They are known as one of the most powerful races in the galaxy, also the most bloodthirsty.

➛ Superhuman strength and endurance. All Yato are significantly stronger than humans, and their bodies are capable of taking damage that would kill anyone else. For example, Kamui's subordinate catches a bullet in his teeth, his father is able to withstand a blast from a battleship with only his umbrella as a shield, and Kamui himself keeps fighting long enough to slaughter twenty men after being pumped with poison plenty to kill an elephant. Not only can they survive the vacuum of space (somehow!), Kamui even manages to break into the control center of a spaceship from outside. He frequently murders opponents just by thrusting his palm through their chests.

➛ Rapid healing capabilities. Though Kamui is very skilled with ignoring or simply hiding his pain on top of his insane durability, his abilities go one step farther. Yato are very quick healers. This is established right away when Kagura is shot and bleeding on the ground only to sit up and show her new friends that the wound has already closed less than an hour later. Kamui has been literally blown up and yet still able to pop in for some first aid treatment then jump back into battle on the same day.

➛ Extensive hand-to-hand fighting experience. Kamui is not only powerful, he is also disciplined. Fighting life-or-death battles has been his norm since he was a child, and through accumulated experience, he's gained a keen battle sense to accompany his seemingly weightless acrobatics. His teacher was the infamous Housen, King of the Yato Clan, and Kamui has since usurped his late teacher's position as leader of Harusame's Seventh Division, the organization's strongest combat division. Though he regularly refers to himself as an idiot, when it comes to the battlefield, he's a brutal mastermind.

➛ Yato blood. The blood of the Yato Clan is described by Kamui as a sort of collective intuition made up of the memory of their ancestors. Throughout most of the series, this is seen as a negative trait because Yato instincts always tend toward violence. The Yato have to overcome their base instincts or else lose their identities to a sea of mindless bloodlust. Kamui, Kagura, and Umibouzu all fall prey to their blood at one point in their lives - during which time they attack their opponents indiscriminately and with no regard for their own bodies. It's their own personalized berserker button. Although Kagura is originally afraid of this blood, Kamui teaches her that there's more to it as long as the Yato in question is properly disciplined. This well of instinct can be utilized through the senses and allow one to measure his/her opponent, comparing said opponent to the thousands of battles stored within their blood's collective memory. Kamui can sense the presence of other Yato with it, distinguish the truly powerful from the braggadocious, and better analyze the enemy's battle strategy.

Other Noteworthy Traits:

➛ Sunlight sensitivity. Though the Yato are infamously powerful, they do have one prominent weakness: their bodies cannot handle direct sunlight. Exposure to the sun's rays will dry them out until they literally crumble to death. Many Yato, Kamui included, develop some small immunity through exposure therapy, but even then, the sun will make them ill or exhaust them and prolonged exposure will still kill them. Because of this, Yato are known throughout the galaxy for their pale, flawless skin and the parasols they carry. Because they have to have these parasols with them at all times anyway, the Yato reinforce and weaponize them, using them as clubs or even guns. Kamui is no exception.

➛ Yato metabolism. The Yato as a species have to eat enormous amounts of food in order to maintain their muscular physiques and quick healing. Kamui is ranked the biggest eater of them all.

Weapons & Other Special Inventory: On his person, Kamui will have his clothing (hooded cloak, kung fu styled shirt and pants, socks, boots, sash, hair tie) and the bandages he wrapped around his arms to protect them from the sun. He will also have his reinforced deep purple parasol. The handle acts as a gun barrel which will be loaded with regular bullets. His extra item will be his parasol's sheath. (Yes, he really does have a sheath for his parasol.)

Color: Red. Kamui is an assassin with an overwhelming urge to spill blood, and as cliche as the choice may be, I feel like it's the only one for him.

Sample: TDM Toplevel

[ OPTIONAL ] World Aspect: Two words: space pirates. Gintama is all about aliens invading Earth, and what better plot device is there than spaceship-riding alien pirates? Specific to Gintama and Kamui's history are the Harusame Space Pirates. They and their fleet of ships can be used as an attacking force in a plot, as transportation for a setting change, or even as a supplier for some unknown smuggled substance. Whatever works.

comments

They moved to capture an enemy stronghold ship, but it wound up being a trap. Half of Kamui's men were killed by his own father, hired by their enemy's leader Utsuro, but when Kamui and Umibouzu charged at each other, the already ransacked stronghold burst. Kamui disappeared into the darkness of space.

He did not reappear until Takasugi Shinsuke took a fatal fall on the planet Rakuyou, where Kamui's Seventh Division and Takasugi's Kiheitai had agreed to meet if they were separated. He saved Takasugi's life but didn't stick around. With the silent assertion that they were now even, he left to deal with his own matters: namely his father.

Once he found his target, he issued his showy challenge. The fight began with Kamui dropping an entire cliff on Umibouzu and only got more intense from there. Despite that a war was raging around them, the two members of the Yato clan became absorbed only with killing each other. They would have succeeded too, if Kamui's younger sister Kagura hadn't stopped them.

Not thrilled with the interruption, Kamui turned his wrath on Kagura, leaving Umibouzu to agonize over his children destroying each other. Umibouzu believed that the only responsible thing to do after bringing a monster like Kamui into the world was to kill Kamui himself. However, when the main antagonist Utsuro made his move to kill Kamui first, Umibouzu shoved both of his children out of the way. In the end, he couldn't stand to watch his children die. Kamui and Kagura fell along with the landslide caused by Umibouzu and Utsuro's powerful confrontation.

In the valley where they fell, Kamui told Kagura why he left home so many years ago. As a child, he'd learned that their mother was dying because she could only live with the support of the Altana from her home planet. Umibouzu took her away from that planet so that they could marry and have a family. Thus, Kamui had determined, the only way to save his mother was to cast aside his family and take her back to her home world by force. In order to do this, Kamui tried to kill his father and failed. Knowing he couldn't remain with his family after that, he ran away with the Harusame Space Pirates. With this explanation, he asked Kagura to let him go as killing Umibouzu was all he had left. He buried her under a pile of boulders and left.

Upon returning to the battlefield, Kamui saw that his father had lost to Utsuro. Enraged that someone had gotten to Umibouzu first, Kamui charged his dying father only to be stopped by Gintoki.

Kamui still refused to leave Umibouzu be, so Gintoki grabbed the fallen warrior and headbutted him back into the ground. With that, he proclaimed himself as the one who defeated Umibouzu, antagonizing Kamui into fighting him instead. Kamui did not hold back, throwing all of his anger at Gintoki. The fact that Gintoki never wavered despite that he was losing disturbed Kamui, and he sensed that Gintoki was putting his strength into fighting someone else entirely. He asked who Gintoki was really fighting. Gintoki told him he was fighting himself, something Kamui was running away from. Kamui did not like that.

The vengeful Yato warrior had given up everything for strength. The idea that there was a sentimental part of himself that he could not throw away, that this sentimental part of himself was why he couldn't win, was too much for him to take. Kamui lost control of his Yato blood, forfeiting all reason and purpose. It took Gintoki, Kagura, Shinpachi, and Abuto to hold off his senseless onslaught long enough for him to regain his senses, but even their combined efforts could not stop him. Only once Kamui won the fight against himself and accepted that there was a part of him he cherished even more than strength did the battle end.

Kamui and Kagura threw one last punch at each other, but when it came down to it, Kamui could not kill the little sister he'd once promised his father he'd protect. His punch missed, and the two broken siblings collapsed into each other's arms.

A large faction of the Harusame space pirates, including three division leaders, approached after the fight had finished. They claimed that seeing the protagonists recklessly challenge Utsuro and his vast armies made them realize they were on the wrong side of the fight. Pirates were meant to defy the status quo, not enforce it, and the ragtag group fighting Utsuro looked a great deal more free than any of them. Despite that Kamui was lying on the ground beaten and broken, they would rather follow him than the mighty Utsuro. Kamui left Rakuyou with them, proclaiming that he'd never lose again, especially not to himself.

If he couldn't do that much, he could never face his family again.

While Utsuro's faction came together and surrounded planet Earth, Kamui did the opposite. He ordered his men on a wild rampage, taking out the enemy's forces everywhere else. He didn't return to Earth until the last minute, when planet-wide destruction was imminent.

After he and his men crashed through Utsuro's defenses and landed on Earth, Kamui met Gintoki and was pointed in Kagura's direction. He swiftly moved to save his sister from her attackers. He and Kagura shared a brief moment of mutual encouragement, during which Kamui asserted that he would help them save Earth, but afterward he'd be ready to defeat her anytime.

This camaraderie lasted for a whole two minutes. Kamui and Kagura's team up against the leader of their attackers, dubbed the Eldest, quickly devolved into the two siblings beating on each other instead. Their petty squabbles should have put them at a disadvantage in the fight, but in true Yato family fashion, they started using the Eldest as a projectile weapon against each other. The Eldest's poor crotch was thoroughly abused in the process, as the ruthless siblings seemed to aim there with every single hit. Eventually, they grew bored with him and finished him off with a combined strike.

The most surprising thing about the entire conflict, however, was that after the battle, Kamui reassured Kagura and their enemies that he had not killed the Eldest. Nothing had changed, he insisted; he just had no use for the weak. He had his eyes on a bigger prize.

When Kamui moved to attack Kagura for real, Gintoki finally arrived to scold him and put a stop to it. In a characteristically dramatic display, Kamui agreed to be patient so long as Gintoki, Kagura, and his other targets made sure not to die in the upcoming battles.

They all leaped into the fray, fighting for Earth together.

CANON PERSONALITY: Kamui is by his own admission "empty," a snapped soul with nothing left but to move forward on his eternal hunt for strength.

As a child, his family meant everything to him. They were the reason he first sought strength. His father was one of the strongest Yato out there, and that all powerful man had asked him to protect his mother and little sister in his stead. When his mother fell ill, Kamui poured his heart and soul into being everything she needed him to be. Until he learned the harsh truth his father had been hiding from him. His mother was a mutant, born on the Yato's now uninhabitable home planet. That planet was the only place she could live, yet her husband and children would die under such harsh conditions. She chose her family over her health. Now she was dying.

Kamui's very existence was killing the one person he wanted to protect most.

The day he learned this was the day he shattered. He took his family down with him when he tried to kidnap his mother and force her to return to her home planet. He attacked his father, and his father nearly killed him, all while his mother watched weakly from the sidelines and his little sister begged them to stop. His young mind warped, desperate for a way out, but all he could do was run away. He'd destroyed everything he cared about, his one place in the universe, and he'd done it more thoroughly than even he'd thought possible. He could never go back again.

It's from this mentality that the Kamui of the present was born. He is a man who only looks forward, disregarding the past as nothing more than a crutch. He shuns worldly or emotional attachments to anything, even his own life, and openly despises the weak. His only goal is to become "the strongest," and he will do anything, kill anyone, to get there.

Kamui's obsession with strength is a lifelong one. He has always had difficulty defining it, and thus, he's looked to others as examples. When his father's strength couldn't save his mother, he began looking to a man named Housen, the then leader of the Harusame Space Pirates Seventh Division. Housen's strength was easy to understand because it wasn't meant to protect, only to destroy. It makes sense, after all. The strength Kamui had gained in his desperate attempts to save his family only netted him tragedy. This must be because strength isn't meant to protect others in the first place. No, strength is not a means to an end; strength is the only end for which one should strive.

He is very closed minded in that sense, choosing to see the world in black and white. Anything that doesn't fit into his definition of strength must therefore be weakness. Umibouzu, one of the strongest men in the galaxy, is weak in Kamui's eyes because he wasn't willing to kill Kamui, his first and only son. Housen, the King of the Yato and the man who taught Kamui how to fight, is also weak because he fell in love with a woman and was desperate enough to cage her. These two former idols of Kamui's fell prey to such weakness as love, guilt, lust, and possessiveness. According to Kamui, that is their downfall, and he's not wrong. Housen dies to an uprising of those women he's subjugated, and Umibouzu loses both his arms because of Kamui. The very concept of honing one's strength to protect something is now outright insulting to his ideology because it betrays one's weakness, and more than anything else, Kamui detests his own weakness.

This is why he has so much trouble with protagonist Gintoki and his little sister Kagura. They wear their weaknesses like a badge of honor and yet Kamui cannot beat them into submission. Through their persistence, they lay his weakness bare: the fact that he still loves and wants to be acknowledged by the family he destroyed.

Kamui does eventually accept this weakness as a part of his identity and is forced to eat a piece of humble pie, but this doesn't make him a better person by any means. If anything, it gives him the opportunity to be even more intolerable. He sees no reason to reform (once a pirate, always a pirate) and decides that because the reason he couldn't defeat Kagura was that she refused to stay down, he'll just have to refuse to accept defeat himself. This becomes his new definition of strength: refusing to give up until he's accomplished his goal. In the hands of a shounen protagonist, such conviction becomes his best trait. In the hands of Kamui, it becomes a vow to protect his prey until he can kill them himself.

His decision making has always been guided by his momentary whims in this way. While his well-honed battle sense and pure, unadulterated power are what he's known for among his enemies, his followers see a different side to him daily. Kamui is brutal, yes, but he's also selfish, sacrilegious, and single-minded to the core. He will tease and taunt and pettily torture his companions with as much gusto as his enemies. He will ditch anyone and anything the moment they no longer interest him. These traits are actually what make him so charismatic among his fellow outlaws. What Kamui desires isn't the perks of a higher status or a better world to live in but rather to topple the entire hierarchy just to prove he can.

He says as much when his second in command Abuto points out that his actions will get the entire Seventh Division in trouble with Harusame's higher ups. If his superiors don't approve of his actions, Kamui chimes cheerily, he'll kill them. He'll have to kill them sooner or later anyway if he wants to become the strongest; angering them enough to come after him only makes his job easier.

Honestly, this entire personality section could be summed up with a concise, "He does what he wants when he wants, and screw everyone else." Not only is he a selfish asshole, he is a self-aware selfish asshole. This makes his smug grin that much more intolerable because he can't be reasoned with. He is the man who waged war against the universe and said with a smile that it's just what pirates do. He already knows he's an idiot with no desire but to fight until he dies, so anyone with the balls to tell him what he is as if he doesn't know is clearly asking to be shat on.

What makes this unabashedly obnoxious personality so fascinating, however, are the moments when Kamui contradicts his own rules. Until Kagura beats some sense into him, he's convinced that caring is weakness, that strength is all that matters, and that losers deserve death. Yet he still spares one of his subordinates when he's lost a fight, holds back his desire to do battle with Shinsuke because he "owes him one," and repeatedly aids his little sister rather than kill her. Despite Kamui's long-suffering crusade to snuff out his emotion, he never actually succeeds.

The reason for this is revealed as far back as his very first appearance. During his introduction arc, he goes to great lengths to reunite a young boy with his prostitute mother. He justifies it as spiting Housen, but Housen chides him over how transparent this act of vicarious redemption really is.

Kamui's mother has been his conscience the entire time.

It's just too bad that she couldn't also be his therapist.

SKILLS/ABILITIES: Kamui is a member of the Yato Clan, a race of violent aliens from a long dead planet. They are known as one of the most powerful races in the galaxy, also the most bloodthirsty.

➛ Inhuman physical strength and endurance: All Yato are significantly stronger than humans, and their bodies are capable of taking damage that would kill anyone else. For example, Kamui's subordinate catches a bullet in his teeth, his father is able to withstand a blast from a battleship with only an umbrella, and Kamui himself keeps fighting long enough to kill twenty men after being pumped with enough poison to kill an elephant. Not only can they survive the vacuum of space, Kamui even manages to break into the control center of a spaceship from outside. He frequently murders opponents just by thrusting his palm straight through their chests.

➛ Extensive hand-to-hand fighting experience: Kamui is not only powerful, he is also disciplined, accompanying his punches and kicks with seemingly weightless acrobatics and a keen battle sense. He learned how to fight from the King of the Yato and has since usurped his title as leader of Harusame's Seventh Division. Though he regularly refers to himself as an idiot, when it comes to the battlefield, he's anything but.

➛ Yato blood: Their blood is described by Kamui as a sort of collective intuition made up of the memory of their entire species. Throughout most of the series, this is seen as a negative trait because Yato instincts always tend toward violence. The Yato have to overcome their base instincts or else lose their identities to a sea of mindless bloodlust. Kamui, Kagura, and Umibouzu all fall prey to their blood at one point in their lives - during which time they attack everyone indiscriminately without care for their opponents or themselves. Although Kagura is originally afraid of this blood, Kamui teaches her that there's more to it as long as the Yato in question is disciplined. This well of instinct can be utilized through the senses and allow one to measure his/her opponent, comparing said opponent to the thousands of battles stored within their blood's collective memory. Kamui can sense the presence of other Yato with it, distinguish the truly powerful from the braggadocious, and analyze the enemy's battle strategy.

➛ Sunlight sensitivity: Though the Yato are infamously powerful, they do have one prominent weakness. Their bodies cannot handle direct sunlight. Prolonged exposure to the sun's rays dries them out until they literally crumble to death. Because of this, Yato are known throughout the galaxy for their pale, flawless skin and the parasols they carry. They reinforce and weaponize these parasols, using them as clubs or even guns. Kamui is no exception.

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Kamui Brisby
AU AGE: 19
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: Kamui will no longer be a Yato, so he will actually be able to tan without dying.

AU HISTORY: Permission for familial ties was granted by courageofheart who is also apping this round.

Kamui was born Mr. and Mrs. Brisby's first child. He was followed by two younger brothers before Mr. Brisby met his end in a car crash. Kamui was eight, his brothers even younger, and Mrs. Brisby was left to raise them on her own.

Kamui's early years were filled with taking care of his brothers and being the perfect son a mother could ask for. He did everything he could to help, even if he was a sloppy little kid about it. Then he got sick. At nine years old, Kamui fell ill with a severe case of pneumonia. Mrs. Brisby tortured herself trying to nurse him back to health, but it was never enough. She was forced to reach out to her husband's friends in Recolle in order to get Kamui the medical care he needed. With their aid, the Brisbys were able to move to Recolle and eventually adjust to big city life.

Throughout his illness and recovery, Kamui was keenly aware of how far his mother had pushed herself for his sake. His tiny mind blamed his weak, stupid body. Soon enough, a mixture of self-loathing and the eagerness to prove himself developed into chronic misbehavior. The more he interacted with people outside of his family, the less he was willing to listen to what any of them had to say. He had to be untouchable, both emotionally and physically, so that no one would ever worry over him again. Gradually, his harmless schoolyard games expanded to include trespassing, theft, bullying, vandalism, and fights.

By middle school, Kamui was a full-fledged delinquent. The only thing that kept him from joining any actual gangs was the potential danger to his family. He didn't care what happened to him, but he'd be damned if he let anyone touch his mother or little brothers while he still breathed. He made sure to never ditch school more than he could get away with, hid his fight injuries with thick clothing and a giant smile, even bullied money out of other students so that he could pay his own medical expenses. He was careful, but no one as reckless and foolhardy as Kamui could be careful for long.

In Kamui's final year of middle school, he made his first major mistake: he let another student goad him into a fight inside the classroom. Kamui threw his own desk chair at the boy and proceeded to beat him until three teachers finally managed to pull him away. With so many witnesses, this time he couldn't escape the consequences. Kamui was shipped off to a juvenile detention center for assault and battery. He was there for a year - receiving counseling, doing community service, working through issues he insisted he didn't have.

Though no staff ever managed to get through to him, there was one person who did. Mrs. Elizabeth Brisby visited her son every day she was able. She panicked, she cried, she was sure she'd failed him; and Kamui realized he hadn't been careful at all. He was released the summer before his sophomore year of high school, and though he wasn't a new man, he was determined to become one.

During his high school years, he spent his free time searching out ways to blow off steam legally. He had started working with wood and metal in juvie and continued to do so now, carving out the beginnings of his custom weapons business. He kept his fighting to underground circles, punching only people who had agreed to the fight beforehand. Stealing was now the coward's way out, and bullying grew boring. It wasn't about him anymore. He didn't have to be untouchable for his own sake; he had to be indomitable for hers. He didn't have to ensure no one worried about him; he just had to make himself worthy of that worry.

Because that was real strength, and real strength wouldn't make his mother cry.

AU PERSONALITY: No amount of nature vs. nurture tampering can cure Kamui of his desperate desire for strength. He will always feel the need to prove himself and to protect what he loves. That is how he defines his personal worth. Having been born human, however, Kamui Brisby pares all of his Yato counterpart's extremes down to a more acceptable moderation.

Kamui Brisby is no nihilistic assassin, to start. He may have no qualms with smashing someone's face in to prove a point, but he would never take a life if he had the choice. You can't learn not to mess with Kamui Brisby if you're too dead to mess with Kamui Brisby. While he has little respect for the law or authority in general, he is also well aware that he would hurt his family if he were to be arrested again. That more than morals or ethics keeps his criminal tendencies in check.

Since Kamui's home isn't completely broken, he also never reached his shattering point. Kamui Brisby isn't afraid to care about people, and that means he isn't "empty" either. Kamui Brisby still has something to protect - a loving mother, little brothers, his own future. He can't give those up like his counterpart deluded himself into doing when he decided worldly attachments were for the weak. As such, Kamui Brisby is a much more social animal. He seeks out people for more than just a fight; he wants to joke and tease and mess around for the fun of it. He wants to get in trouble for kicks rather than for the purpose of furthering his murder spree, and he wants strength so that he can impress people instead of slaughter them. His canon counterpart is too single-minded and set in his one goal to even consider broadening his horizons in such simple ways. But Kamui Brisby lives in a world where his goals can't be accomplished without close ties.

While Kamui Brisby is still as selfish, sacrilegious, and single-minded as ever, he does have a selective off button. It doesn't matter what anybody else wants - until someone gives him what he wants. It doesn't matter what anybody else believes - until believing in something makes that person strong. It doesn't matter what anybody else expects from him - until what he wants is to give them what they want. Basically, because Kamui Brisby isn't afraid to accept that he cares, he isn't always afraid to show it either. Though sentiment is far from common in his everyday discourse, if compelled, he will actually express it in ways more complex than not killing someone.

Kamui the Yato may be the leader of an assassination squad and a combat specialist, but Kamui Brisby is very undisciplined in his violence. He's wild and unpredictable when he fights, caring very little about the outcome as long as he can brawl his frustrations away. Without purpose in battle, he can be fickle - able to punch someone's nose in one day and then greet them cheerfully the next. True to his Yato counterpart, he also comes to admire anyone who can beat him, even if they use underhanded methods. Strength is bad ass, and anyone more bad ass than him is someone he needs to learn from, not envy. Because of this, he can fall into friendly correspondence with people who beat him up and vice versa with more ease than he can with most other people out there. Literally bonding through fists.

It's important to note that his outward demeanor is not that different from his canon counterpart's. Kamui Brisby taunts friends and foes alike. He's petty and prideful, disregards rules like they're sweaty socks, does whatever he feels like whenever he feels like it, and makes way too many vulgar jokes. He's a selfish asshole. What actually differs between the human and the Yato is that when Kamui Brisby realizes he's being a selfish asshole, he has a still breathing reason to stop.

His mother is his therapist.

SAMPLE
01

comments
