Background Information:
http://gintama.wikia.com/wiki/Kamui
Personality:
Kamui is a snapped soul.
His father explains to Gintoki that he was once a different person, but when he was younger and still a member of an unbroken home, something changed. Unfortunately, Kamui isn't about to reveal that something any time soon. There's no merit in revisiting the past, not unless it annoys his subordinates.
The best way to understand Kamui might be to understand the Yato Clan. They are one of the three most powerful amanto (humanoid alien) races known to man, often considered the most powerful, and are famous for nearly wiping themselves out through civil war. Violence is literally in their blood. Yato always shine brightest in battle. Kagura, Kamui's younger sister, is determined to fight against her Yato instincts. Kamui, however, wholeheartedly embraces them.
He lives, breathes, and worships the battlefield, so to him, strength is everything. "The pillar known as the body and a soul that remains sharp" are the requirements for that strength. If someone is lacking in either sense, then they're simply too weak to bother with.
Kamui is very closed-minded in that sense. All people can be divided into two strict categories: the strong and the weak. People can fluctuate between categories, growing strong or becoming weak, but they are only ever one or the other. There is no exception, and there is no forgiving the weak. As he says to his second-in-command Abuto, "People who lose sure are boring."
This view can only lead to one inevitable conclusion. If weakness ensures loss, then Kamui must win to prove his strength. On an endless search for stand-out individuals he can challenge and defeat, Kamui's entire life is a journey from one death match to the next. It's the one concrete way he can both grow stronger and prove his strength. Those are his only goals. He's no super-motivated shounen manga protag who must gain the power he needs to protect his friends. To him, strength is not a means to an end; strength is the only end for which one should strive. The moment any sort of worldly or emotional attachment enters the picture, Kamui is downright insulted.
Umibouzu, one of the strongest men in the galaxy, is weak in Kamui's eyes because he wasn't willing to kill Kamui, his first and only son, after Kamui initiated a fight. Housen, the King of Yato and the man who taught Kamui how to fight, is also weak because he fell in love with a woman and was desperate enough to cage her. The sole exception to this rule is Gintoki Sakata, perhaps the one man who continues to defy Kamui's categorization with his strength born from a will to protect.
Kamui, though intrigued by Gintoki, is determined not to sink to such lows himself. Whether they be family, hierarchy, or noble causes, he doesn't give half a shit about any of them. He will ditch anyone and anything the moment they no longer interest him, and he'll leave plenty of bloodshed in his wake.
His willful fickleness doesn't stop there though. It's virtually endless. Kamui will happily hop onto any bandwagon that does interest him without much thought or care. When he's introduced, he's arbitrarily a space pirate, using his title Captain of the Harusame's Seventh Squadron in order to meet powerful opponents. He doesn't care the least about what the Harusame does or how they do it, nor what they think of him. If his superiors don't approve of his actions, he chimes cheerily to Abuto, he'll kill them. When those superiors do begin to fear his growing influence and try to execute him, he teams up with Takasugi Shinsuke, a man whom he had just failed to assassinate, to do just that. Rather than take up his rightful promotion among the Harusame, however, he jumps ship with Takasugi. After all, this guy is fun, and that's all that really matters.
It's probably clear by now that despite his big talk and vaguely philosophical speeches, Kamui is a selfish asshole. This entire personality section could be summed up with an honest and concise, "He does what he wants when he wants, and screw everyone else." Even worse, he's a self-aware selfish asshole. He as much as stated outright that he keeps Abuto around so that he doesn't have to clean up his own messes, and though he tells Takasugi he'll postpone their fight because he owes him, his awed and intrigued facial expressions give his interest away. He just wants to see where Takasugi's destructive mission leads him. But even while fighting alongside Takasugi, someone he seems to respect, he's still more than happy to disregard orders, break down negotiations, and stir up trouble to suit his own needs. He forgets all about beheading the Shogun the moment he finds himself a worthy opponent and even kills Takasugi's men so that he can fight said opponent one-on-one.
Frankly, part of the reason Kamui respects Takasugi is because none of that bothers him. Takasugi is as selfish and single-minded as he is. Their arrangement is simple and easy to understand: "I'm using you, and you're using me." Because they'd rather be used by someone interesting than a group like Harusame whose fangs have grown dull.
Closed-minded, fickle, and selfish. It's a wonder anyone can stand to be around him for more than ten minutes at a time. What makes Kamui's unabashedly obnoxious character so fascinating, however, are the moments when he contradicts it.
He states that he smiles while killing because everyone, regardless of the life they've led, deserves to be sent off with a smile. It's a strangely sentimental notion for a man like Kamui, but he stands by it, smiling down even on Housen as he dies. When Abuto loses a fight against Kamui's sister, Abuto expects to be struck down. He's entirely prepared for it. And yet, Kamui helps support him instead, insisting he'll need him to deal with the higher ups. Kamui certainly rubs Abuto's loss in his face whenever he can, but even Abuto expects to die after his screw up. For someone with no tolerance for weakness, Kamui's rather forgiving of his closest subordinate.
On the opposite side of the spectrum, he's unnecessarily harsh toward his sister. He reminds her that she's weak every time they meet and that he wants nothing to do with her. Yet, funny enough, he never once honestly tries to kill her. In fact, at one point, he saves her from a common enemy. Kamui avoids fighting with her whenever he can, and when she finally insists on it, he merely tries to get her out of the way. With brute force, sure, but not deadly force. A trait which allows Kagura to strike an injury he'd been guarding. She asks why he's still hiding his injuries like he used to in front of their mother, and despite that his sister is growing stronger, holding her own in this fight, Kamui is clearly annoyed.
It's these rare slip ups that make one wonder: what does Kamui care about so much that he insists on caring about nothing because of it?

Abilities:
Kamui is a member of the Yato Clan, an inhumanly powerful race of amanto. As such, he displays immense strength, endurance, and battle experience.
Yato in general sport super strength and are known for leaving large-scale destruction in their wake. Kamui's subordinate, for example, is able to catch a bullet in his teeth. Kamui himself pierces the chest of one of his other subordinates with only his arm and later shoves a poor, unsuspecting man through two walls. He's much tougher than any human, able to cut through a person's chest and tear off limbs with his bare hands. He's also extremely agile, performing careless acrobatics to enhance his punches and kicks. A deadly and disciplined combination of grace and force.
Yato are also ridiculously sturdy, something that's been a bit of a joke throughout the series. Kamui's younger sister hitches a ride to Earth by holding onto the outside of a spaceship, and his father is able to withstand a blast from a battleship with only an umbrella. Kamui displays a very high pain tolerance and is rarely bothered by even serious injuries. In fact, he goes on grumpily chatting with Abuto after an explosion sends a pipe directly into his stomach. He even tears it out and uses it as a weapon without batting an eye.
An important signature of members of the Yato Clan is their pale, almost iridescent skin, never touched by sunlight. The sun is the Yato's biggest weakness. If exposed for too long, they will literally dry out, cracking to death. Because of this, almost every member of the clan keeps a Chinese parasol with them. Obviously they reinforce these parasols because they use them as highly effective clubs, piercing tools, shields, and guns. If they've gotta tote an umbrella around with them wherever they go, might as well make it a useful umbrella.

The other sample must be written to take place in Carvaka's setting.)
First Person:
[Kamui peers into his phone's screen with a cheery smile.]
I miss Hayashi rice. Someone should pork for me.
[A beat, as he considers his own demand.]
Ah, pork is good too. That's the one with tusks, right?
Third Person:
Sex.
Kamui knew why it was such a big deal, why nearly everyone in the known universe shat their pants over it. His own parents' shotgun wedding had taught him at least that much. He just didn't care, not about sex and not about nearly everyone in the known universe. The idea of sex being necessary to sustain himself was downright stupid. Kamui was all kinds of stupid, sometimes just for kicks, but even he had never been this stupid.
Something as useless as sex could never match the absolute thrill gained from meeting a worthy opponent on the battlefield.
How sad. The world had ended and yet there wasn't a single good fight to be found. Even worse, the ones who had destroyed everything Kamui had known were boring and weak. They could only live in the past until it killed them, indulge themselves to excess in frivolous distractions until they lost themselves in them. The Hedonists had disappointingly fragile bodies and broken souls. They weren't worth his time, even if they had wanted a fight.
This kind of tragedy was...
"Ah!" In the middle of his aimless walk, Kamui stalled, dropping a fist into his other palm. "It's like expecting Avatar the show and getting the movie instead!"
